First Chinese-language newspaper for Botswana

Author: Kwanele Sibanda
Publish: 20 July 2009

China launched its first Chinese-language newspaper in Gaborone, Botswana in a spectacular event that included opera and magic and the presence of Miss Botswana, says danwei.com.

The Oriental Post, officially launched at the end of May 2009, is a weekly publication with a content partnership with the People's Daily.

The launch of the paper in Botswana demonstrates China's determination to be involved in African affairs. The country's interests in the continent have increased significantly since the 1990s.

Liu Huanxing, China's ambassador to Botswana, praised the launch of the Oriental Post and said he hoped it would help promote mutual understanding between China and Africa and become a platform of communication and exchange between the people of Botswana and the Chinese residents there.

The Oriental Post, to be published every Friday, will have between 20 and 40 pages printed in the tabloid format and will gradually be made available across the African continent.
